Simply deploying a good portfolio project management tool is not enough to ensure optimum governance of your business transformation. Follow these five golden rules to structure your approach, and increase your success tenfold.

Reduce the duration of the projects in your portfolio

Here's how we see it: a project shouldn't take longer than three months. Long projects create chaos in teams, which become less committed over time - and often, these projects never see the light of day.

To ensure that each project lasts a maximum of three months, break down your longer projects into several large phases of three months each. In this way, you motivate all stakeholders, and ensure optimal project management.

Define an order of execution for the various projects

To manage your project portfolio effectively, you need to define the priorities for each of your projects. However, management often considers most projects to be of the highest priority, making it difficult to prioritize them on a day-to-day basis in your governance!

To overcome this issue, define an order of execution for the various projects: which comes first, then second, then third?

Make sure you don't always rely on the opinion of the highest-ranking person in the company.
