In the subway, in the car, or in the middle of a jog, Listen to episode 72 of CIO Revolution. Olivier Conq, armed with his many years of experience in terms of CIO, talks to us about the thorny issue of the budget. Your management is always asking you for hyper-complex budgets, which always end up being totally fake, and you are wondering how to get out of them? Olivier has good practices to share with you!
How much time do you spend viewing the tasks in your teams' project management tool? Probably too much time. As a CIO or CTO, you are a member of the Codir - so you shouldn't spend such a significant amount of time getting into the micro of your projects on Jira, Asana, or Monday.
Our position : Ask your IT project managers to provide you with a regular summary of the progress of your projects. After all, as a member of the Codir, you too must keep a really macro vision! The objective is to limit the time you spend observing the microphone, to simply get an idea of the governance of the various projects - but also to save time, by sending this summary directly to your decision-makers.
📚 What if, this month, you took the time to review the basics of your project portfolio management, to make the transformation of your business more efficient, faster, stronger? This is what we offer you, by taking a tour of 10 best practices for portfolio project management, right here !
“The IT budget is a lie: it is absolutely necessary to challenge the traditional way of doing things, which is too complex, and too poorly adapted to agile working methods.”
The word “budget” is enough to make more than one CIO shiver. Faced with your management who always requires precise IT budgets, many of you end up writing obscure documents, with margins of error of 45% at each line... only to finally realize that this forecast is completely unrealistic, as projects move, change, mutate, so much so that projects move, change, mutate during the year.
It is crucial to change the way you think about an IT budget! To start challenging this dusty vision of the budget, consider in particular to propose a budget for the quarter, divided according to the priority projects that you will tackle over the following period. You can then refine this budget in agile mode by sprints.
Another piece of advice: only commit to 80% of your abilities this quarter. It is better to anticipate the unexpected than to have to explain them a posteriori !
We've already been talking about it to you for some time: the Jira + Airsaas integration is finally available on your favorite governance platform!
Manage your projects in macro with AirSaaS, and report the key milestones from your Jira projects on it, to even better visualize the progress of your portfolio.
Thanks to this integration, you keep perfect alignment on the main steps to take for the project to be a success - without the need to bring your sponsors and businesses to Jira!
